Do you know that many winemakers consider themselves artists?  It seems funny to those of us who only think of artists as people who put paint on a canvass, but when it comes down to it, is wine really any different?

I’m a member of a wine club which features hard to find wines.  Although I hate to pay for shipping, I love my membership because I get to see interviews with the people behind the wine.  Those interviews give me a much better idea of what happens to be in the bottle than literally anything else I could do!

Personally, I see health care as an art.  Think about it, there is plenty of room for feeling and simple intuition when it comes to health care.  Do you remove that tumor now when it is small and easy to take out, or do you wait until it gets larger? How do you weigh your patients ability to recover from the surgery?

I was talking about that with my Boston Chiropractor who said he had much the same feeling on the subject.  While his medical practice is, at its core scientific, there is plenty of room to call it an art as well.  Not everyone who comes into his office with a compressed disk receives the same treatment plan.  He changes plans based on patient needs, but also what he thinks will work best for them.

To me, that sounds a lot like an art!

Even in my free time I feel somewhat cramped. My mates know me well and that is the problem. If I act a different way or try out a new style they are likely to poke fun at me. They are bound to make a joke about wanting to get a man or about having a mid-life crisis. It seems that my ability to express myself is only unfettered when I’m alone or when I go on holiday.

It is for this reason that I like to go on holiday to foreign countries by myself. By doing so, I’m not even burdened by the weight of expectations of meeting other people in my city or my country. I usually choose somwhere that I imagine few Americans go.

Last year I went to a quiet beach in Thailand called Lamkaen. It’s just south of Khao Lak on the Andaman Coast of Thailand. It was a fanatastic place to be myself. I could wear what I wanted. Being a beach it was fine to wear a bikini and big hat all day long. When I went to Lamkaen there were quite a few waves. This apparently is normal for March. Rather than having someone tell me it was a stupid idea, I went to the main town of Bang La On and booked some surfing lessons.

I had a very sweet Swedish instructor. He was patient with me and full of encouragement. After 3 sessions I was able to get up on the board and catch small waves. Riding the forces of nature felt like a great form of self-expression.

Near the end of my holiday in Lamkaen I booked up a day tour with Baan Tha Din Daeng Tourism Community. I went swimming in the mountains and I took a boat trip to see nearby Mangrove forests. The people in the community were very friendly and determined to conserve their natural environment. I was happy to give them some money for the tour. I was also happy to realize that self-espression can be about helping others and the environment.

I learnt a lot from traveling by myself in Thailand. I also learnt about the area around Lamkaen. I feel that learning is aided by my ability to express myself.

Another big change is in music. The internet, mp3 players and downloading has broken the monoply of the record companies. People can listen and buy any type of music. People can make a living from music without ever getting a recording contract. More people watch YouTube than MTV.

The game has changed with travel too. Before you were either a backpacker and followed the Lonely Planet recommendations on where to stay, or you were a package tourist and you stayed in a hotel room booked for you. Internet booking changed this, giving people more choice.

Now it is possible to not even stay in a resort or a hostel. You can arrange to rent someone’s house or room through such sites as www.airbnb.co.uk This allows people the chance to gain a different experience on holiday. To really connect with a place. In short you can express yourself by where you stay.

I recently came back from Thailand. I went to the great beach called Thong Nai Pan Noi on Koh Phangan. Rather than pay a not so small fortune to stay in one of the hotels on the beach, I found a private villa to hire on a hill overlooking the beach. It was called Sunrise Villa. It was a unique villa shaped in a D with a wrap around balcony. The villa had a mesmerizing seaview. I spotted sea eagles and hawks and saw some incredible sunrises from the balcony. It was a special experience, and much better expressed my personality than a supposed ’luxury’ bungalow on the beach. Again this is all thnaks to the internet.

I’ve found a way that will help me pay my bills whilst still allowing me to continue doing what I love. I can sell Gold for cash then either use the money to help with the bills or to pay for new paint brushes. Now I would normally keep the gold and melt it down myself to create a unique piece of art with it, but I’m busy with other projects and really need the cash.

Knowing that I don’t have to go out to work in a boring office and that their are much more interesting ways to make a living is great and I’ll continue to do this while ever I can.

This is just like her, to leave it to me, but I understand what she’s going through. She’s still arranging the cast and having to figure out final callbacks by Friday. I guess it’s all going to work out, but I wish I had had a bit more time to find places to shoot. We’re going to have to make the best of a bad situation. This isn’t the first time we’ve had to improvise our sets of decisions. Five years ago we did a site specific theater piece behind a disused loading dock. We thought that it would be able to tour to other loading docks. But we quickly found that we had the only loading dock with a power outlet in all of Britain. Britain. You would think that external lighting would be something occasionally desired at a loading dock, but it seems to have been an afterthought in most of their designs. We could not find a suitable place besides our original location. Again, in that situation we made the best of it, and made a great show. With this movie, I think we are going to have a bit of a harder time because there is no chance of sunlight in the locations we’ve booked. We’re going to have to rely on our lighting team, which I have not yet assembled. I’m not certain that I’ll be able to find the talent that we need to make this beautiful production. We might just have to rely on compelling performances

When I first started contemplating RV living, I was initially worried what others would think of me.  I quickly realized however that there is only one person you need please with your lifestyle choices – yourself!
